Even on our honeymoon...
...we have to visit a garden. And what a garden! Holkham Walled Garden.
What the website says...
The six-acre walled garden at Holkham Hall is one of the finest surviving historic kitchen gardens in England. Built in the late 18th century during the estate's reorganisation by Thomas William Coke, it was designed to supply the Hall with fruit, vegetables, flowers and exotic produce while demonstrating the latest horticultural techniques.
Today, the restored garden combines history with productive gardening. Visitors can explore beautifully maintained ornamental borders, a working kitchen garden, a vineyard, cutting gardens, and impressive Georgian and Victorian glasshouses and vineries, where grapes, peaches and other tender crops were once grown. The garden underwent a major restoration from 2010 onwards, preserving its historic character while returning it to productive use.
What we say... Massive walled garden, well worth a visit, a bit scruffy in areas, but that's me being picky! So large, the walled kitchen garden is huge (it really is). I loved some of the flower planting and I especially liked the drought raised bed, where they have made an undulating gravel garden containing drought resistant plants (shown below). It was a hot day so the posh ice-cream van came in handy and then back near the house, the cafe and shop were both really nice. There was also a very interesting interactive display showing the evolution of the estate and farm. For anyone interested Bev is wearing a lightweight cotton dress from M&S that she bought for her hen weekend in Marrakech!
